Hawai'i Initiative

Whittier College and Hawai'i share a deep and meaningful history. For generations, students from the islands came to Whittier seeking a transformative liberal arts education grounded in critical thinking, communication, and real-world problem-solving. They enriched campus life, became leaders in business, public service, and education, and strengthened the enduring bond between Whittier and Hawai‘i.

In recent years, financial and geographic barriers have made it harder for talented island students to access the Whittier experience. The Hawai'i Initiative renews the College’s commitment by rebuilding pathways, expanding access, and reaffirming its dedication to students who embody perseverance, leadership, and purpose. This initiative reflects a foundational belief: education changes lives when students are given the chance.

Hawai'i Student Scholarships

The Hawai'i Student Scholarships will open doors for promising students from the islands who demonstrate exceptional potential. Each scholarship will affirm to future Poets from Hawai'i that Whittier College and the Hawai'i community are united in supporting their success:

Scholarships will make a Whittier education attainable for more Hawai'i families. Scholarship awards will vary based on financial need, with the goal of supporting as many Hawai'i students as possible. We ask for a four-year commitment to ensure that these scholarships can follow each student through their full Whittier journey.

Importantly, many students from Hawai'i return home after graduation, bringing their leadership, skills, and education back to their communities. Your support strengthens not only Whittier’s campus but also the long-term vitality of Hawai'i itself.
